We take great pride in providing top-tier programming for our student-athletes. We are honored to receive the NSCA Strength of America Award for the 2nd time! This makes us 1 of only 50 High School's in the NATION to receive this prestigious award!
IMPROVED PERFORMANCE
INJURY REDUCTION
Foundational to everything that we do. Our current equipment is outdated and we are lacking in sport performance technology. We are falling behind to other school districts around us and will be playing "catch up" if we do not begin to invest in our performance lab.
EQUIPMENT:
With Phase 1 complete, we have made a tremendous upgrade to our equipment! We still have several pieces that need to be replaced or upgraded and we will need more equipment after transitioning to our new weight room in August 2020. During the 2022-2023 school year we will launch Phase 2. This will include:
Odds & Ends - specialty bars, additional storage, more medicine balls, slam balls, wall graphics, etc.
Launching the Training Table - post workout nutrition, see below.
NUTRITION:
Part of our fundraising efforts will fund post-workout nutrition. This is vital to recovery and improvement. Most people do not realize 72% of our students live in poverty. Many do not eat anything significant in the evenings after training. Some do not eat an evening meal at all. Some of our student-athletes go through the school day with unhealthy food and hydration choices. They then have practice after school and a weight training session follows. The need for a Training Table arises from the fact that if they eat first lunch at 12:00, go through practice and go through a workout, they are closing in on not having any sound nutrition for 7.5 hours. On top of that, if they go home and do not eat until breakfast the next morning, they are delaying their recovery process and ability to grow to their full potential. Providing them with healthy liquid and solid food options on their way out of the building each day would be especially beneficial to those below the poverty line.
GIVE EACH ATHLETE WHAT THEY INDIVIDUALLY NEED ON THAT PARTICULAR DAY FOR NOT ONLY THEIR SPORT OR THEIR POSITION, BUT FOR THEIR NEEDS AS AN INDIVIDUAL PERSON
SPECIALTY EQUIPMENT
Specialty equipment will allow us to make training more safe, sport specific, and athlete specific. Specialty bars allow us to keep athletes in safer positions during max-effort lifts. For example, the safety squat bar will allow the athlete to keep a more upright posture taking pressure off of the low back while building the legs and it allows the shoulders and elbows to be in a safer position. Our number one rule is "do no harm." An athlete should not be injured in training. Equipment like the "Iron Neck" has been shown to decrease the risk of concussion by improving neck strength.
We have already managed to start a collection of some specialty equipment thanks to the PTSA and some district funding
NUTRITION
We have a 72% poverty rate and many of our athletes do not get the calories they need to recover from training. Part of our fundraising efforts will fund post-workout nutrition at our Training Table. This is vital to recovery and improvement. Currently, Coach Young has allocated funding for me to provide football players with fruit and grain bars after practice and chocolate milk after workouts, but all of our athletes should be given this opportunity as well as more options.
Recovery is arguably more important than training. It is during the recovery when the athlete adapts, grows, and improves. Athletes need calories and nutrients to recover from training. We want to be able to give all of our athletes post-workout nutrition each training session. Hopefully we will be able to give liquid and solid nutrition at the conclusion of each workout. With our poverty rate it would be ideal to have the ability to offer additional calories to our athletes who are below the poverty line.
