Learning at Home

While I avoid homework, there are times when it is necessary. Usually homework should take around 10-15 minutes. Examples of homework: a student needs to finish an assignment started in class, read a passage for the next class period, review vocabulary, work on a long-term project. Students should make sure they have all materials for homework (including downloading assignments if internet accessibility is an issue). GCS buses are equipped with WIFI so many students can complete homework on the way home.

Greenville County Schools uses eLearning when following a modified attendance plan (due to COVID-19) or in the event of severe weather to lessen disruptions to learning when we are not able to be at school.

Students are expected to complete all eLearning assignments. I will provide videos, instructions, and all necessary materials for the assignment to be completed at home by the due date indicated in Google Classroom. During eLearning, students should read and follow the directions, attend Google Meets that are scheduled for instruction and to ask questions (links and times posted in Google Classroom). Students may also ask questions through comments on the assignment in Google Classroom, via email (type sjmoore in the To: line and I should appear), or via mobile (864-660-9050).

Whether it's homework or eLearning, there are times we must learn at home. Having the right setup and routines will make you successful.

• Set a schedule - Choose a time to get it done. Sticking to a routine will keep you on track.

• Have a designated place to work - In bed is not ideal. You associate your bed with sleep and rest. Use a desk or a table. If you have to work at a soft surface, like on a couch, use a tray table so you're not juggling everything in your lap.

• Avoid distractions - Light music is OK. Keep the phone put away and the TV off. Use earbuds for your music or to work quietly on your Chromebook.

• Reward yourself - Have 5-10 minutes of reward after an hour of work. Take breaks and move around during that time so you can focus. This is the time to check notifications on your phone.

• If you don't feel like something is working, change it up and see if things improve. Make sure you give it time - you don't need to do something different everyday.
