Students are expected to learn and do their part to maintain a healthy, productive learning environment.
Students should be prepared mentally and academically every day. This means they have the supplies they need and have completed work in class and at home as needed.
Please use the links below for more specific expectations for classroom supplies, school behavior, classroom behavior, and consequences when expectations are not met.
Many of these are also addressed in the student handbook.

Phones and Personal Electronics
By state law, students are not allowed to have phones or other personal electronics during the school day. This includes earbuds to listen to music. Students are instructed to turn off and put phones in their bookbags when they first come to class. They must stay there until after announcements at 3:15. They are not allowed to be carried in pockets. Infractions are handled by adminstrators.

These procedures are subject to change when we are no longer observing social distancing.
Entering the Classroom: Students will enter the classroom quietly one at a time while being welcomed at the door. Lines to enter should follow social distancing guidelines. Dependent on transitions between classrooms.
Getting Started: Students will have all materials for the day on their desk at the start of class. The teacher will have a list of materials on the board at the start of class. Bookbags can be stored at the desk but cannot be in the aisles or on the back of the desk. Students may store them at the front of the room.
Sharpened pencils will be provided for students who need and will be collected and cleaned at the end of class by the teacher.
Students who borrow a pencil will receive a mark on a classroom tracker under Preparedness.
Turning In Homework: Students will turn in their homework as they enter the classroom. As they prepare for the daily instruction students will submit online assignments, before beginning Kickstarter, if they did not do so at home.
For paper assignments, students will place their homework on their desk to be collected by the teacher.
For students without internet access at home, they will download their homework for the day before beginning the Kickstarter so they can access it once they get home.
Bell Work, aka "Kickstarter": Students will begin to work on their daily Kickstarter as they sit at their seats at the beginning of class for two to five minutes.
Good News: The teacher will lead the class in Good News after students have had a few minutes to complete Kickstarter. Students may continue working quietly on Kickstarter during Good News.
Restroom: To protect the learning environment, students may not use the restroom during the first ten minutes of class, the last ten minutes of class, or during direct instruction.
Students will request to use the restroom by raising their hand and crossing the middle and index fingers (sign language for the letter R).
After the teacher has approved the request, the student will go quickly to the restroom, taking the pass written by the teacher. [Paper pass on ½ sheet of Post-It Note so it does not need to be sanitized.]
Only one student of each gender may go the restroom at a time.
Wonder Pass: Girls may usurp any wait for the restroom in the case of menstrual-related issues. Girls raise their hand with a fist and the teacher will issue a paper pass for the nurse and the restroom.
If possible, menstrual-related supplies will be kept in the classroom or in a female teacher’s classroom on the same teaching team in order to prevent the student from having to travel to the nurse.
Passing Out Materials: The teacher will pass out any materials needed for class that day at the beginning of class to eliminate any unnecessary movement.
Requesting Materials: If students need any materials, they will raise their hand to ask for materials.
Other Requests: If students need to sharpen a pencil or need a tissue, they will raise their hand with the index finger raised, like a number one. They will wait for permission from the teacher before moving and may be directed to move in a particular path. They will address their needs and return quickly and quietly to their seat. The teacher may, in order to minimize movement, opt to loan a sharpened pencil to be collected and sanitized or to bring the box of tissues to the desk.
If a student’s Chromebook is running on a low battery, they can raise their hand with the index and middle finger extended, like a number two. The teacher will bring a power strip to the student’s desk.
[Hand signals TBD - will be posted in the classroom.]
Seating: Students will ask permission before moving around the classroom. Teacher will give instructions for movement during class time.
Group Work: Students will not work in groups to maintain social distancing guidelines. Students may talk with a partner, at a reasonable level, from their current seat position.
Turning In Work: Most assignments will be given via Google Classroom or other technology tools for students to turn in. Any paperwork will be turned in to the appropriate classroom box located near the door so that students can drop it as they exit.
Summarizing Activity: Students will answer an exit ticket/discussion question before exiting the classroom. If on paper, exit tickets will be collected by the teacher at the door as they launch.
The teacher may also lead the class in Appreciation, Apology, AHA! strategy for reflection.
Leaving the Classroom: Students will be dismissed in an orderly fashion when leaving the classroom. All materials must be turned into their appropriate box to be disinfected. Students will wipe down their seating area and police the area around their desk before leaving the classroom as well.
Missing Work: Since most work will be digital, students should access and complete missed work per the Tanglewood Late Work and Redo Policy. It is the student’s responsibility to ask questions about missed assignments during homeroom, bus dismissal, independent work time in class, or digital office hours.
Assignments on paper that are missed during a student’s assigned day at school will be placed in the Missed Work box. It is the student’s responsibility to retrieve, complete, and turn in this missed assignment per Tanglewood policy. Students should retrieve missed assignments at the beginning of class.
The teacher has the discretion to exempt a graded assignment if the student will not return for an extended period (e.g.. students attend one day per week), but the teacher may ask the student to complete for a knowledge/skill check.
Movement in Classroom between Activities: Transitions in class will be limited during class time due to social distancing guidelines.
Transitioning among Core Classes: TBD - These transitions will be dependent on guidelines released by the state and district.
Since classes are staying together from one subject to another, one class will dismiss to line up outside another. Students will then file into the empty classroom. Procedure repeats until the students lined up are able to file into the now empty classroom.
Transitioning To and From Lunch: TBD - These transitions will be dependent on guidelines released by the state and district.
Teachers will observe social distancing in the lines and at the tables.
Students will eat lunch in their classrooms to ensure social distancing.
Transitioning To and From Related Arts: TBD - These transitions will be dependent on guidelines released by the state and district.
Classroom teachers will be walking students to related arts. Related arts teachers will be walking students back to class.
Refocus Questions / Preguntas de reenfoque:
What are you doing? ¿Qué estás hacienda?
What are you supposed to be doing? ¿Qué se supone que debes estar haciendo?
Why aren't you doing it? ¿Por qué no lo haces?
What are you going to do about it? ¿Qué vas a hacer al respecto?
For some disruptions and infractions, teachers may move a student's seat or take away flex time. Teachers may address minor interruptions with steps. Like a ladder, the consequences climb in severity with future infractions. For each of these, we will contact a parent or guardian. At step 7 and every infraction following, the student will receive a referral and consquences assigned by an administrator.

Referral
Referrals are given for serious behaviors and infractions. These include but are not limited to: touching and horseplaying, profanity, bullying, skipping class, and fighting.
Se emiten remisiones por conductas e infracciones graves. Estas incluyen, entre otras: tocamientos y juegos bruscos, lenguaje grosero, acoso escolar, faltar a clase y peleas.
Sometimes, you might be upset or anxious and do not feel you can be productive in class. It is good to recognize those situations. You can ask me for time in the Mindfulness Corner or to have a Mindful Moment somewhere else.
You cannot be wholly successful if you are not in class learning. The Four Questions are the first step in keeping you on-task and re-establishing a positive learning environment when you err. I may offer you time in the Mindfulness Corner to reflect and regroup. However, if you are not able to correct your inappropriate behavior or cause a significant disruption, you will be removed from class for one period per the school disciplinary policy. Anytime you are removed from class, I will call home. Severe and/or excessive offenses will result in a referral along with a call home.
I would rather fix the underlying problem than the symptom. So, if something is causing inappropriate behavior, let’s work to address it. We can come up with strategies for learning or to manage stress, seating arrangements and activities to accommodate excessive energy, and resources for an array of situations. Finding a solution includes asking me to do something different if what I say or do, or how I say or do something, is part of the problem.
