Parents Page

As a parent, you play an integral role in your child's learning. We encourage you to be actively involved in your child's education. At Westcliffe we have a Parent Resource room in our school. It is located in the main office (Ms. Fisher's classroom in office). As a parent, you can check out games and books in English and Spanish for your child. Please stop by at anytime to see the resources available to you to help your child at home.

If you don't exercise daily with your children, who will?

Children need 60 minutes of exercise a day. In addition, most children should get between 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night. Why so much? Sleep gives the body a chance to rest, repair itself, and prepare for the next day.

Don't forget to check your student's grade in physical education. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by phone or e-mail.

Syllabus

MAJOR ASSESSMENTS: The students in my class will be evaluated on the following

criteria:

1. Teacher observation of active class participation (Doing your personal best).

2. Meeting the state physical education standards.

3. Following directions and positive social interaction.

4. In-class written and skills based assessments.

HOMEWORK/MAKE-UP WORK: Any written quizzes, skills tests, or fitness tests not finished by a student in class will be expected to be completed during lunch, recess, or after school by the student.

RULES AND PROCEDURES: Students will explore the rules and procedures during the

first days of school and will be allowed to ask questions and give input into the class rules.

RULES FOR BEHAVIOR:

1. Always do your personal best.

2. Respect yourself and others.

3. Treat all equipment with care.

CONSEQUENCES:

1. If a student violates any of the rules they will be asked to sit in time-out and think about their

behavior and why it was wrong.

2. If a student continues to break the rules, the Physical Education instructor will notify the parents

of that student.

3. If a student violates the rules severely, such as fighting or endangering another student, they

will immediately be sent to the office and written up on a referral.

REWARD SYSTEM:

Individual Plan- Students who have exhibited excellent behavior and are encouraging others as they work will receive rewards such as teacher praise, group recognition, stickers, football or baseball cards, pencils, and notes home. Students will also be chosen to lead the class in exercises and/or assist other students during class as a reward for cooperative behavior.

Whole Class Plan- At the end of each Physical Education period that class will receive a score that they have earned ranging from 10 (excellent) to 6 (needs improvement) based on their classes overall performance in following directions, participating fully, and showing good sportsmanship that week. At the beginning of each week the Golden Shoe physical education class of the week will be announced. This will be the class that had the best behavior, tried their personal best, and followed instructions the previous week. Their class will get to place the golden shoe in their room for the entire week as a symbol of their accomplishment. They will also get a certificate to keep for the whole year commemorating their accomplishment.

COMMUNICATION: Parental Communication will be done in a variety of ways. Phone calls, personal contact, notes, and letters that will be sent home will all inform the parent/guardian of how his/her child is doing in school. My physical education webpage will also be updated to include any new developments, digital learning assignments when necessary, and all upcoming events.

STUDENT PROCEDURES FOR NON-INSTRUCTIONAL ROUTINES: Students will be allowed to use the restroom only in emergencies and to get water as needed during activities. They will be expected to come into the gym quietly and sit down without touching any of the equipment that is set up. Student will freeze with their hands on their knees when a whistle is blown once and come over and sit down in front of the teacher when a whistle is blown twice. Students will also freeze when the music is turned off and begin an activity when the music is turned on. The homeroom teacher will lead students to class and I will return them to at the end of the period.
