Language

Language skills are crucial to effective communication. Receptive Language is made up of the skills related to processing and understanding language that is said to you. Following directions, knowing the meaning of questions, and understanding vocabulary words are examples of receptive language tasks. Expressive Language is made up of the skills related to generating language and sharing thoughts/ideas/wants/needs. Describing vocabulary words, generating grammatically correct sentences, and providing appropriate answers to questions are examples of expressive language tasks.

Helpful Tip

Sentence structure is complex. It's hard for students to grasp correct order, verb usage, pronouns, etc. all at the same time. Model great, complete sentences while you're talking with your child, but choose one area on which to focus at a time.
