In 2014 the South Carolina Legislation passed Erin’s Law, as part of Health and Safety Education. The purpose of the law is to ensure that all students Pre-Kindergarten through High School receive this prevention instruction during the academic school year. The intent of the law is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to remain safe from sexual assault and how to make a report if an assault occurs.  Instructional units were written as a resource guide for teachers to implement Erin’s Law. These units are aligned with the South Carolina Academic Health and Safety Education. Lesson content varies from grade to grade. A copy of each lesson will be available at your child’s school for you to preview if you choose. Over the next few months your child’s counselor will be presenting this lesson to your student. The lesson content is not part of sexuality education and only discusses age appropriate health and safety education.  If you have any further questions, please contact your child’s counselor.

The Julie Valentine Center is partnering with Greenville County Schools and will also be presenting a program on Sexual Harassment and Online Safety in our school. This unit is designed to help students recognize harassing behaviors, how to report them, and what to do if they see or experience these types of situations. Additionally, this program is designed to help students recognize the dangers of sharing personal information online, risky behaviors, online predators, cyberbullying, and sexting. The overall goal of this program is to empower students to identify and adopt a positive online presence, deal with potentially dangerous and harassing situations while emphasizing respectful, responsible relationships. It encourages open communication with parents, guardians, trusted adults, and their peers.  Please see additional information below.
