Riverside High School offers three orchestra blocks during the regular school day, with several course levels represented. Students are placed according to prior experience, musical readiness, instrumentation needs, and recommendations from the orchestra director or a previous teacher. Because more than one course level may meet during the same block, instruction and assignments are adapted to the needs of each student.
Beginning Orchestra introduces students to string playing and ensemble performance. No previous orchestra experience is required. Students develop fundamental skills in posture, tone production, music reading, rhythm, and rehearsal procedures.
Freshman Orchestra is designed primarily for students entering the Riverside orchestra program with previous string experience. The course emphasizes technical development, ensemble skills, music reading, and preparation for more advanced repertoire.
Concert Orchestra continues the development of technique, musical expression, sight-reading, and ensemble performance. Students rehearse and perform a varied selection of orchestral literature while preparing for concerts and other performance opportunities.
Advanced Orchestra provides experienced students with more challenging repertoire and greater musical responsibility. Students are expected to demonstrate strong preparation, leadership, technical proficiency, and commitment to the orchestra program. Depending on the semester and course schedule, this ensemble may be listed as Chamber Orchestra.
Honors Credit is an additional academic track rather than a separate performing ensemble. Students enrolled for Honors credit may be members of any orchestra class and must complete the additional Honors requirements outlined in the course syllabus.
All Riverside orchestras perform several times throughout the school year. Students may also participate in Region Orchestra, All-State Orchestra, county and district events, chamber music, and other enrichment opportunities.
