Director

Dr. Yuriy Leonovich is a cellist, conductor, composer, and educator originally from Kyiv, Ukraine. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied cello with Stephen Geber and Robert DeMaine and composition with James Hartway.

Before joining Riverside High School, Dr. Leonovich taught at the university level for more than twelve years. His work included teaching cello, conducting string orchestra, coordinating chamber music, and teaching courses in music theory, string literature, orchestral repertoire, and cello pedagogy. He has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, conductor, and orchestral musician throughout the United States.

Dr. Leonovich is also active as an arranger, editor, publisher, and music researcher. His work has helped rediscover and expand the cello repertoire through new editions, arrangements, and performances of neglected music. At Riverside, he is committed to helping students develop strong musical skills, disciplined rehearsal habits, confidence in performance, and a lasting appreciation for music.
