Setting children up for educational success is one of the best ways we can invest in the lives of young people. Reading and writing are foundational to students' future passions and endeavors as adult citizens.
Learning to read can be a complex journey. Children are learning many skills simultaneously in order to read and comprehend text.
So, what are ways that your child can be supported at home while they are learning these new skills at school each day?
Set an evening routine that includes the parent reading aloud.
Now is a great time to get your child's first Library Card if they do not have one! This allows students to choose books that interest them. Scroll to the bottom for the link to their website!
Practice the letters and words that they are learning in class.
Have your student read more and more of the words that they know in a story as you read.
Throughout the year give more and more of the responsibility of reading each night to your child.

Help your child find books about topics that interest them.
When students come to a word they don't know, help them use it as a learning opportunity, and help them solve it.
Discuss what happened in the book after you read, and help your child retell what happened.

When reading chapter books, stop and discus what happened/what each section was about.
After you finish the book, discuss the characters and what happened in the story like the problem and solution.
