What can you do when your child comes to a word they don't know?
Having your child read out loud to you is the best way to reinforce and build early reading skills. It can be tricky to know exactly how to help your child when they come to a word they do not know.
Here are some ways to support children as they work through challenges:
Have your child identify the first sound of the word to help them solve the word.
Have your child look for parts of the word that they know to help them solve the word.
Help your child divide the word into syllables and work through the sounds.
If your child misreads a word ask them if the sentence makes sense.
