CLASSROOM PROCEDURES AND EXPECTATIONS:
If your child’s regular means of transportation changes, you must send in a note with the child. NO exceptions will be made. If you are picking your child up in the car line, a car tag must be visible. If you forgot your car tag, you must go to the office to pick up your child. If you misplace your original car tag, please let me know so you can get a new one before afternoon dismissal.
● Send lunch snack money on Monday mornings with your child’s full name on it or attached to it.
● A newsletter will be sent home weekly. Please read for important information.
● The homework sheet listing the homework for the entire week will be sent home on Monday in the homework folder. This homework sheet and folder will be sent home each day and will contain all necessary materials (i.e. handwriting paper for written work, books, worksheets, etc.) Students should return the folder, homework sheet, materials, and the homework from the previous night the next school day. Each student is expected to complete the assigned homework.
● Graded work will be sent home in your child’s folder once a week on Fridays. Some of the graded work will be kept in your child’s classroom portfolio; if you wish to review this work please let me know and I’ll be glad to set a time for you to come into the classroom to do so.
GRADES/TESTS
Language Arts
Students will be assessed in a variety of ways and on an ongoing basis. Writing and language development will be assessed through direct teacher observation and rubrics. Also, students will have a portfolio of their writing throughout the year to show progress. Additionally, there will be teacher/student conferences about their writing and the writing process. Reading will be assessed formally using running records, skills tests, and story comprehension tests. Moreover, there will be Fastbridge tests, daily oral language quizzes, and weekly assessments on the ability to recognize word wall words.
Math
Students are formally assessed three times per year (fall, winter, spring) using the benchmark provided by the Greenville County Math Standards Guide. Additionally students will be assessed after completing each math unit. Other evaluations include teacher observation, textbook assessments, and teacher designed evaluations.
Social Sciences (Social Studies, Science, and Health)
Social Science knowledge will be assessed through large and small group questioning and observation. Other forms of assessment include written responses, multiple choice tests, projects and class discussions.
*Report Cards are sent home on a quarterly basis. (Conferences will take place prior to the first quarter report card.) Progress reports will be sent home for students who may be struggling in a particular area. Unlike upper grades, letter grades are not given in first grade.
Our school wide behavior system is based on the acronym:
SHINE: S-Show respect. H-Hold yourself accountable. I-Inspire others. N-Never give up. E-Everyday make good choices!
The SHINE support system teaches students how to Show Respect, Hold Yourself Accountable, Inspire Others, Never Give Up, and Every Day Make Good Choices in the following areas: the cafeteria, the classroom, the hallway, the bathroom, the playground, the arrival/dismissal areas, and during assemblies.
Homework
Students will be given homework each week. Students will have all week to complete the homework and turn it in on Friday.
