**I communicate A LOT throughout the year with information and pictures or even a fun announcement!
Below is some information about our classroom:
Take Home Folders will go home & be returned the next day IF there is something to be sent home, otherwise information is sent via the planner or email.
Grades: This is the BIGGEST jump from being a Firstie to Second Grader
In 2nd grade we have assessments that get graded on the GCS grading scale. You may keep up with your cuties grades on your Backpack account. I will list ALL assessments for the week on our newsletter too.
We have assessments in every subject, and these grades count towards each quarters Report Card Grade. 😁 Do not panic, we start off the year (for quite a bit) with me walking the kiddos through every single test, reading it to them, and guiding them how to find the correct answer.
Here's a quick overview on each subject breakdown: Do not fret! We are a team and family....we've got this!
Spelling tests: these will be weekly along with 2 dictation sentences (a seperate grade). Homework will be based on spelling, and a 'spelling menu' will go home each month for the students to pick from each week. There will be 10-15 words a week, which will be based upon our phonics skills (a lot of review from 1st gr and we build upon that)
Reading tests/quizzes: Module Assessments (majors) will be done on Mastery Connect (the computer) per the district. These will occur around every 3-4 weeks. Each week will be a Google Classroom Assessment (quiz/minor) based upon our story for the week. Many, many, many assignments will be given throughout the 9wks as a 'minor' to support your kiddos grade average for report cards.
Math tests/quizzes: End of Unit Math Assessments (majors) will be done via Mastery Connect per the district, quizzes (minors) will also be administered through paper and pencil to support your child's grade.
Social Studies: There are minimal tests/assessments in this subject, many of our grades are based upon assignments in class
Science: There are minimal tests/assessments in this subject, grades will be based upon participation/class assignments/and a few projects in class.
Language Arts: LA is the subject area with the most grades-it will consist of spelling tests/work, dictation sentences, phonics, and our writing assignments.
If you have any questions please reach out for more information. This can be very intimidating at first for the students and the parents, but I am here to support them and you.
Mastery Connect:
Three times a year we take the Mastery Connect (standardized test) Assessment too! We work weekly on the 'questioning/wording' of what is seen on these tests. This does NOT count as a grade on the report card.
Cogat/Iowa:
In the fall your sweetie will also take the CoGat/Iowa test....this is the Gifted & Talented Screening! It'll be given over a few days, and done by paper and pencil. We walk them through it, but it will be different than all the other assessments we accomplish throughout the year. This assesment is NOT a grade for report cards. It is a State Assessment.
Behavior:
Behavior will be done daily, IF there is an issue parents will be notified immediately, or an email will be sent home at the end of the day depending on the severity of the issue. Throughout the day if students are caught being on task, using kindness/manners/respect, being helpful, or being an overall great citizen of our classroom community, they may earn a sticker for their chart (displayed in class) or a piece of candy.
Behavior Chart:
Once the chart is full they may chose a 'ticket'-which consists of fun things:
**borrow the teacher's chair for the day
**homework pass that night
**stinky feet (shoes off during class)
**show & tell
**fuzzy friend (bring a small stuffed animal from home to sit at their desk), fun things like this.
Snacks:
Daily snack is allowed and encouraged. We eat around 10a since our lunch is late in the day. Healthy snacks that are easy to eat are wonderful.
Homework:
Homework will be posted on the newsletter, along with any announcements in the planner. Homework will differ each week, however it usually will consist of picking from the Spelling Menu (in the Take Home Folder).
Students may bring books from home to read silently in class to keep in their book boxes for ELA center time. Please make sure books are appropriate for school.
Chaperones MUST be a level 2 to go on ANY field trips this year. We plan to have 3 field trips this year. Our End Of The Year celebration is HUGE and we will need all hands on deck.
