Dear Families,
I am thrilled to welcome you and your child to another exciting school year! My name is Carolyn Christine Burroughs-Hayes, and I am honored to be your child's teacher. Building strong relationships with my students and their families is at the heart of everything I do, and I look forward to partnering with you to ensure your child's success.
This year marks my 23rd year in education, with 16 of those years dedicated to Special Education. I was born and raised in Welch, West Virginia, where I spent 18 wonderful years teaching before joining the Greenville County Schools family. The 2026-27 school year will be my third year at Hillcrest High School and my fifth year with Greenville County Schools.
I hold a Master's Degree in Multi-categorical Special Education (K-Adult) from Marshall University, with a specialization in Math instruction and an Autism certificate. I am highly qualified and fully certified in the following areas:
Multi-Categorical Special Education
Specific Learning Disability
Emotional Disturbed
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with students at all levels—from elementary through high school. My first two years were spent as a 6th grade elementary teacher, and I have since worked extensively as a high school special education teacher. My experience includes:
Self-contained classroom settings
Inclusion and co-teaching environments
Educational support classes
Instruction across all content areas: Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies
I also enjoyed three years as a Middle School Cheer Coach, which allowed me to connect with students beyond the classroom and support their growth in teamwork and leadership.
Beyond my passion for education, family is everything to me. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Joseph, for 30 years. Together, we have three children—Joseph, Zaraneisha, and Zareonna—and two bonus children, Jordan and Seaira. We are blessed with three amazing grandchildren: London, Braylon, and Grayson, and we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new granddaughter in November 2026!
In my free time, I love spending time at the beach, playing with my grandchildren, and finding peace through prayer and meditation.
I am passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of all my students. Every child brings unique strengths, talents, and perspectives to our classroom, and I am committed to creating a supportive, engaging learning environment where every student can thrive.
I am excited to get to know you and your child this year. Please feel free to reach out anytime—I believe that open communication and collaboration between home and school are key to student success.
Here's to a wonderful year ahead!
Warmly,
Carolyn Christine Burroughs-Hayes
