Units of Instruction: Individual goals are presented and monitored throughout the year until a student has reached mastery. For specific goal information, please refer to your child's IEP. For each grade level, I follow the scope and sequence designed by the district. Therefore, when their 3rd grade class is covering multiplication strategies, your child will also be working on those skills in my resource class. I align their regular education curriculum to my curriculum as much as possible to ensure cohesion.
Calculation of Grades: Students are given assessments that reflect our unit of study. I do record percentage grades and will share them with you on report cards and at annual reviews. However, the IEP report cards indicate their level of mastery toward their IEP goal. Students can receive the following codes based on their progress toward their IEP goals. Not introduced; Satisfactory Progress; Minimal Progress; Unsatisfactory Progress. The report card closest to the annual review will be given codes for Mastered or Not Mastered.
Homework Policy: For inclusion students, homework is critical to practice the skill taught in class. I check every assignment to identify errors so it is important that your child show all work. Often times I can quickly reteach the concept before starting the next one. For students who are pulled out of their general education classroom, I do not assign homework. I check their independent work completed in class to determine their errors and provide reteaching if needed.
Inclusion Classes: Inclusion services means that the special education teacher provides direct, services in the student’s core academic class rather than being pulled out of the general education setting. Co-teaching is a collaborative teaching method where two teachers, general education teacher and special education teacher, work together to plan, teach, and assess a class.
Procedures for non-instructional routines: Students who come to the resource room have an interactive notebook that stays in my class. When entering the room, students will locate their interactive notebook and get a pencil from the pencil bucket. As soon as all students are seated, we will start with our lesson. Students may ask to use the restroom during class and teacher will determine if this is an appropriate time to miss class.
Communication: Parents may request a conference or an IEP meeting at any time. For inclusion classes, I am connected through ClassDojo. Communication is required for scheduling an annual review. I will always provide a formal invitation letter and a personal contact via email, in person, or phone call.
South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards: A complete list of SCCCR are provided on the Greenville County website as well as the SC State Department of Education website. At the beginning of each unit, the class participates in a discussion to brainstorm what careers/occupations would require this set of skills for performance in their job. As we speak so frequently that elementary standards/learning targets are the basis for life-long skills and are needed for all people regardless of career. Furthermore we delve deeper into the specific careers and jobs that require the skills identified in our learning target.
