First Grade Syllabus

2025-2026

Very soon, your child will begin their year in 1st grade! I understand that you and your child may meet this day and year with both excitement and apprehension. I hope that the following information will help you know what to expect in first grade this year, and answer many of the questions you may have. Please keep this as a reference.

Parent/Teacher Communication:

I believe that a strong parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. I value your input and view you as the expert on your child and my partner in your child’s education. Throughout the year I will be communicating with you through phone calls, emails, weekly newsletters, my website, and conferences. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time. I do ask you to give me a 24-hour business-day window to respond to any emails or phone calls. My classroom phone will not ring during the school day but please feel free to leave me a voicemail. Please make sure to check our class website weekly, as it will contain information such as newsletters, upcoming dates, and any other class information.

Attendance:
Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success. Most of our learning activities are group oriented and involve interaction with classmates. Please view school as a priority, and see to it that your child attends every day, except in cases of illness or an emergency. Please try to schedule medical appointments after school hours or on student holidays.

Lunch:

The price of lunch for students this year is $2.50. Each class will have a treat day once a week. On treat day, students will be able to purchase an extra treat (ice cream, cookies, chips, etc.) from the cafeteria. Our treat day will be Friday.

Classroom Expectations:

In order to create a safe environment where students feel free to be themselves, take risks, make mistakes, and grow as learners, we will have set expectations for our classroom. My number one expectation is that students are respectful, responsible, and kind to each other and to our materials. My goal is for students to be responsible for their own behavior and recognize that their actions affect themselves and others. If misbehavior occurs, please know that I will address the issue with your child individually; my goal is not to embarrass children for their behavior, but to help them understand appropriate behaviors for the situations that they are in or the feelings they may be experiencing. Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you have throughout the school year about behavior.

Homework:

Homework is for additional practice. Students will be expected to read daily, practice their math fact fluency for addition and subtraction with sums up to 10, and practice their weekly heart words and spelling patterns.

Assessment Guidelines:

In first grade, we use several different assessments in order to help us meet your child’s instructional needs. Data from anecdotal notes, checklists, observations, and rubrics will be used to help guide instruction tailored to your child. We will have math tests at the conclusion of each unit. We will work to see mastery of skills and strategies across all areas. Below is the Greenville County School District scoring guide that you will see this year on report cards.

Materials:

Please help your child be prepared by ensuring that they come to school each day with their bookbag, fully charged Chromebook, and blue communication folder.

eLearning Guidelines for Inclement Weather:

Your child will receive eLearning plans through Google Classroom. The eLearning lesson plans will involve a Google Meet and assignments through Google Classroom. Your child will need to complete the lessons for the day and attend the Google Meet.

Google Meet Expectations:

Please review these expectations with your child. You can use the graphic below, or even cut it out of this page and post it in the space your child will be working as a reminder.
