A Brain Smart Start is a daily classroom routine used in Conscious Discipline classrooms to help students feel safe, connected, and ready to learn. Research shows that children learn best when they feel a sense of belonging and emotional safety. The Brain Smart Start creates that foundation each day.
Each Brain Smart Start includes four key components:
Unity – Building connection and a sense of belonging within the classroom community.
Disengage Stress – Using breathing, movement, songs, or activities to help students calm their bodies and focus their minds.
Connect – Strengthening positive relationships through greetings, partner activities, and meaningful interactions.
Commit – Setting a positive intention and commitment for learning and behavior throughout the day.
At Lake Forest Elementary, Brain Smart Starts help create a positive classroom culture where students feel valued, connected, and prepared to do their best learning. By beginning each day in this way, we build strong relationships, support emotional well-being, and set the stage for academic success.
