"We must be calm ourselves to help children calm themselves."
At Lake Forest Elementary, we believe emotional regulation is one of the most important life skills a child can learn. Emotional regulation is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions in healthy and appropriate ways.
Just as we teach students how to read, write, and solve math problems, we also teach them how to handle feelings such as frustration, disappointment, worry, excitement, anger, and sadness. These skills are not something children automatically know—they must be taught, modeled, and practiced over time.
Through Conscious Discipline, students learn how to:
Recognize and name their emotions
Understand how emotions affect their behavior
Use breathing and calming strategies when upset
Express feelings appropriately
Solve problems peacefully
Recover from mistakes and challenges
Our classrooms provide students with opportunities to practice these skills every day through Brain Smart Starts, breathing exercises, Safe Places, problem-solving conversations, and positive relationships with caring adults.
When children develop strong emotional regulation skills, they are better able to:
Focus and engage in learning
Build healthy friendships
Handle challenges and setbacks
Make responsible choices
Communicate their needs effectively
Develop confidence and resilience
At Lake Forest, we know that emotional regulation is not about eliminating emotions. It is about helping children understand that all feelings are welcome and teaching them the skills needed to respond to those feelings in safe, respectful, and productive ways.
By helping students regulate their emotions, we empower them to become successful learners, compassionate friends, and confident leaders.
