The Code/Read 180 is an amazing program that was purchased by the School District of Greenville County. This program focuses on several different areas of the struggling reader. I have been blessed to teach Code/Read 180 for several years and have been amazed at the success I saw from each and every child that was enrolled in the program.
The Code
The Code has several different components. This system ensures that every student receives direction instruction in foundational reading, reading informational texts, reading literature, writing, speaking/listening, and language to help them prepare to be better readers and students.
This program exposes students to higher-level, content-rich texts while scaffolding close reading and comprehension through text-based questions. Students accelerate toward grade-level expectations with teacher-guided analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of text. T
Each module includes two writing task focused around the writing skills at the hear of college and career readiness: informative and argument writing. Students collaborate on performance tasks, synthesizing and applying knowledge to a research questions. Each research project develops writing and presentation skills that are critical.
The next component centers around technology. As students work independently on the computer, The Code software is automatically and continuously collecting student performance data, which feeds multiple reports that help teachers to develop small group instruction. Moving the students from foundational instruction in phonics and decoding, the software guides students to apply newly acquired foundational skills to reading connection text.
One final component to this program is the Independent Reading Station. The Code library offers students a choice of age-appropriate, relevant, leveled titles that are 78% nonfiction, and are available in three formats: as Paperbacks, Audio-books, and eBooks. Audio-books support students with a coach who models a fluent read. eBooks are available anywhere/anytime.
Read 180
Read 180 is a research-based program with proven results in raising student reading achievement. Each day, students receive instruction and practice essential reading skills through my lessons. They will use software designed to target students' specific reading needs, and will engage in independent reading.
In our Read 180 class, students will strengthen their literacy by developing:
skills needed to read fluently nd understand what they have read;
knowledge needed to read and understand texts across a wide range of subjects, such as social studies, science and math;
writing skills across a range of writing types;
a deep level of confidence in themselves and their literacy abilities.
Read 180 challenges students to work hard and, by doing so, achieve reading success. You can offer encouragement and provide support at home by visiting the library, setting aside reading time, and discussing what your student is learning in Read 180.
