Our school motto is "Soaring Beyond Limits!" This is also true in the music classroom. Our students are unique and diverse. With the many needs present within our student body, from severe intellectual disabilities, to special physical needs, a variety of instructional approaches are needed and used in the music classroom to accommodate each student, and to enhance the learning experience, so all students can soar!
Music brings true joy to students. It has the ability to change a person's mood. It can bring peace and excitement, or help students to display better focus. No matter how students respond, whether with singing or vocalizing, fine motor movements of the face, gazing, or rocking, the benefits of the musical experience are positive. It is a unique form of human expression like no other. In the adapted music classroom, adapted music standards are addressed during lessons to help give students a better understanding of the music around them. This leads to opportunities for music-making and better enjoyment of musical experiences.
Music also enhances and facilitates learning. Students remain engaged in activities longer, and learn more, and with more ease when music is present. Minds are open to new experiences, allowing students to accomplish many things. Music makes learning fun.
