Students must complete the coursework required for their chosen focus area in order to earn magnet graduation distinction. Magnet students are only required to complete one focus area, but have the option of adding a second or third focus area if they desire to do so. To declare a second or third Magnet intent, students should notify their counselor at their IGP meeting.
Magnet Distinction Requirement #1 -- 9th Grade at NewTech@Mann
All Magnet students begin their coursework in NewTech@Mann in the 9th Grade. NewTech@Mann is a comprehensive high school program that offers required courses in a project-based format. (Students who begin their magnet focus area in the 10th or 11th Grades will be excused from this requirement.) In 10th Grade, Magnet students have the option of staying with NewTech@Mann courses to satisfy their magnet requirements or taking the remainder of their required courses in traditional classes.
Magnet Distinction Requirement #2 -- Advanced Academics in Focus Area
Each Magnet focus area has a list of required courses that students must successfully complete. Each focus area requires at least one college-level course that culminates in college credit. There are three focus areas: Mathematics, Science and Technology. Click here to see the list of required courses.
Graduation Distinction Recommendations
There are several academic options at J. L. Mann High School that Dr. Alsip would recommend for Magnet students. These are not required for Magnet distinction, but they offer additional distinctions or opportunities that many of our Magnet students pursue. Magnet students should talk with their counselor about making room in their schedule for any that interest them.
