Students who live outside J. L. Mann High School's attendance zone must apply to and be accepted into the Magnet Program in order to attend J. L. Mann High School. These students can apply to enter the Magnet Program in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade.
Student acceptance into the J. L. Mann Magnet Program is based on grades, attendance, and discipline records from their middle school.
The three magnet focus areas at the school are mathematics, science, and technology. Students must be able to complete the course requirements in their chosen magnet focus areas by the end of their senior year.
Homebased students may declare their Magnet intention in the 9th, 10th or 11th grades, as long as they are able to finish magnet requirements before graduation.
Homebased students do not need to apply for Magnet status. To declare Magnet intent, an interested Homebased student must notify their J. L. Mann counselor at their annual IGP meeting. At the IGP meeting the counselor will check to make sure the student can complete the Magnet requirements before graduation and will notify the Magnet Coordinator of the student's intent.
