Course Description:
AP Statistics introduces students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. We will utilize technology, problem-solving, hands-on activities, drill, exploration, and discussion to ensure a thorough understanding of the concepts. In addition to emphasizing the discovery method, this course will emphasize critical and analytical reading skills and written communication rather than routine procedures. This course is intended to be the equivalent to a college introductory non-calculus-based statistics course. In May, all students will take the AP exam, and those scoring a 3 or higher will likely receive college credit.
The topics for AP Statistics are divided into four major themes which include exploratory analysis of data, sampling and experimentation, probability, and statistical inference.
Course Outcomes:
By the end of the year, students will be able to:
• communicate his/her knowledge of statistics to others.
• read analytically.
• become a problem solver.
• understand the importance of statistics and its relationship to the real world.
• transfer learning from statistics to other areas.
Course Outline:
• One-Variable Data
• Two-Variable Data
• Collecting Data
• Probability
• Inference (Sampling Distributions, Confidence Intervals and Hypothesis Testing)
Calculators:
As a math department, we recommend that students purchase (if financially possible) a TI-84 or calculator. I have some TI-84 Plus calculators that students are welcome to borrow during class if they need to. We will be using the calculators frequently in class, and they are also able to use them on the AP exam. If you have any questions about the calculators, please feel free to ask.
