Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)

Definition

SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions (CASEL, 2021).

Teaching the 5 Core Competencies

HMS Counselors will visit your child's classroom once a month to teach lessons on the 5 SEL competencies.

August- Introduction Lesson November- Social Awareness

September- Self-Awareness January- Relationship Skills

October- Self-Management February/March- Responsible Decision Making

HMS Counselors use the GCS SEL Goals and Standards (linked above) when creating and implementing classroom lessons, small groups, and programs for our students.

Once a week during PAWS (1st Period), teachers use the program Character Strong to provide lessons on Social and Emotional Learning.  Ask your child each week what their "Character Dare" is to hear more about what they are learning through the lessons!
