Orchestra 1, 2, 3, 4 is a combined ensemble where we will learn to play pieces of music, expand our knowledge in different music subjects, improve as an ensemble and individuals, and perform in concerts and festivals.
Prerequisites: Student must have taken orchestra within the last year, or have had lessons to keep up playing ability. No beginners are allowed to take this course. Students must be able to read music, identify components, and have a basic understanding of playing their instruments.

Audition required for participation: No, but students will need to know how to do the basics listed above.

Time Commitment: This class meets during the school day. If we have an event or concert, we will have after-school rehearsals based on availability of the students.

Blue Ridge High School Orchestra is a course in playing the violin, viola, cello, or bass. The class is designed to address students who have had at least two-three years of prior instruction on a string instrument. It should be understood that this syllabus contains a list of topics in the order in which they are presented. However, the study of each musical concept continues throughout the year as the students apply these skills to exercises and performance selections. Classroom assignments address the National and State Standards. I have included a brief listing of these standards below:

This class is designed for students who have had a minimum of three years of experience playing violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students should have three or more years of prior instruction or pass an equivalency test administered by the instructor to participate in orchestra. The goal of orchestra class is for students to be able to confidently and accurately perform appropriate grade level music. As a result of practice and exposure to high quality musical performance and literature, students will also develop an appreciation for the skill and artistry involved in playing a musical instrument.
Prerequisites: Students should ideally have minimum of three years experience playing the violin, viola, cello, or bass prior to signing up for Orchestra 1.
Enrollment required for participation: Yes
Audition required for participation: No audition required. Students who have less than three years of experience that want to sign up for orchestra should schedule a time to meet with Mrs. Bass prior to registration to demonstrate skills and ability so that the student can be placed in the correct orchestra class, if applicable.

Time Commitment: Minimum of four concerts per year in the evenings and between five and eight after-school rehearsals throughout the year. Although subject to change, all rehearsals and performance dates are handed out to students on the first day of the school year (or semester).

Strings Chamber Music
Course Name: Strings Chamber Music

The Fine Arts Center offers a unique approach to string education in the United States. A daily chamber music class is offered to develop individual technical proficiency, rehearsal technique, performance, communication, advanced musicianship, and musical decision-making skills. Students perform several formal public concerts at the school and in the community, and participate in guest master classes. An advanced technical regimen, solo and chamber music of professional caliber comprise the musical literature of the course. Students participate in a variety of chamber ensembles performing works ranging from the Baroque era to premieres by contemporary composers.
Prerequisites: At least three years of playing experience
Enrollment required for participation: Yes
Audition required for participation: Pre-screening repertoire: A three octave scale of your choice. (Bass - two octaves); one movement of a solo piece, sonata, or concerto. Finals: Two contrasting movements from a solo piece, sonata, or concerto (movements performed do not need to be from the same piece); a three-octave major and minor scale (two octave scales for bassists). Students will also take a short theory placement exam. Students should refer to the FAC website for directions as to how to submit the pre-screening video under "Auditions."
Sign up process: Students will submit a preliminary video recording and based on their recording, may be invited to audition on the FAC campus.
Sign up dates: Specific dates can be found on the Fine Arts Center website.
Time Commitment: Students rehearse daily during school hours either in the morning, or afternoon hours depending on their experience level. Students will be required to participate in at least three evening performances throughout the school year. In addition, professional guest clinicians visit the FAC campus to provide extra performance opportunities. This is an honors intensive class.

Honors orchestra classes are performance based and as a result, are directly tied to co-curricular activities. Participation in auditions and concerts out of the regular school day are required to participate in winter and spring concerts, SCMEA Concert Performance Assessment, Greenville All-County Orchestra auditions, Region and All-State Orchestra auditions, SCMEA Solo and Ensemble, and other performances determined by the school orchestra director.
