Blue Ridge High School Orchestra is a course in playing the violin, viola, cello, or bass. The class is designed to address students who have had at least two-three years of prior instruction on a string instrument. It should be understood that this syllabus contains a list of topics in the order in which they are presented. However, the study of each musical concept continues throughout the year as the students apply these skills to exercises and performance selections. Classroom assignments address the National and State Standards. I have included a brief listing of these standards below:

Standards for Instrumental Music:

Anchor Standard 1: I can compose and arrange music

Anchor Standard 2: I can improvise music.

Anchor Standard 3: I can produce a characteristic tone.

Anchor Standard 4: I can perform with technical accuracy and expression.

Anchor Standard 5: I can perform using musical notation.

Anchor Standard 6: I can analyze music.

Anchor Standard 7: I can evaluate music.

Anchor Standard 8: I can relate musical ideas to personal experiences, culture, and history.

Anchor Standard 9: I can relate music to other arts disciplines, other content areas, and career path choices.

Time Commitment: After school dress rehearsal for concerts. Concerts are mandatory and we have at least one per semester. Daily home practice is strongly encouraged.

Course Name: Orchestra 1 - Orchestra 8H

This class is designed for students who have had a minimum of three years of experience playing violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students should have three or more years of prior instruction or pass an equivalency test administered by the instructor to participate in orchestra. The goal of orchestra class is for students to be able to confidently and accurately perform appropriate grade level music. As a result of practice and exposure to high quality musical performance and literature, students will also develop an appreciation for the skill and artistry involved in playing a musical instrument.

• Prerequisites: Students should ideally have minimum of three years experience playing the violin, viola, cello, or bass prior to signing up for Orchestra 1.

• Enrollment required for participation: Yes

• Audition required for participation: No audition required. Students who have less than three years of experience that want to sign up for orchestra should schedule a time to meet with Mrs. Bass prior to registration to demonstrate skills and ability so that the student can be placed in the correct orchestra class, if applicable.

• Sign up process: Through your school counselor, during IGP and registration times.

• Sign up dates: Must register for class during registration period

Time Commitment: Minimum of four concerts per year in the evenings and between five and eight after-school rehearsals throughout the year. Although subject to change, all rehearsals and performance dates are handed out to students on the first day of the school year (or semester).

This course emphasizes basic musicianship on individual strings or orchestra instruments. Students concentrate on developing technique, tone quality, range, and proper posture. Students receive concentrated instruction in performance techniques and have the opportunity to apply them through solo performance and chamber ensemble participation.

• Prerequisites: Participation in the middle school program or private study and teacher recommendation.

• Enrollment required for participation: Yes

• Audition required for participation: No

• Sign up process: Register for class and receive teacher recommendation to continue Orchestra at high school level

• Sign up dates: During your school's registration window (needs to sign up before school year starts as it is a year long class.)

Time Commitment: Weekly rehearsal during class, three evening concerts per year (Fall, Winter, and Spring) with mandatory after-school rehearsals; Concert Performance Assessment trip (usually during school) with mandatory after-school rehearsal; Veteran's Day rehearsal and performance during school hours; Solo and Ensemble/Region/All-County rehearsals with audition preparation before school.

This class is designed for students that have experience playing violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students need to have completed two or more years of prior instruction and reach a level of playing to be able to play music of grade 2 and above, or pass an equivalency audition administered by the instructor to participate. Skills will be practiced in solo playing, orchestral performance, and small ensemble. The general goal is for students to be able to confidently and accurately perform appropriate grade level music. As a result of their practice and exposure to high quality musical performance and literature, they should also develop an appreciation for the skill and artistry involved in playing a musical instrument. Through study of music theory and history, students should also be able to place famous composers in a historical context and discuss various elements of music used in traditional orchestral repertoire.

• Prerequisites: 1 or 2 years middle school strings
