The Instrumental Band Course is a wind ensemble class where students will perform music with others, learn the components of music, and grow as a musician.
Prerequisites: Student will need to have taken a band class the year prior to entering high school. Students must know how to read the basics in music such as note names, note values, and can count basic rhythms. If you have not taken band and would like to learn, we have a beginning band course that we offer.

"Freshman Band" is for all 9th grade band students to adjust to a more challenging musical experience. Students will work as an ensemble to further develop their technique on their instrument and expand their knowledge of musical repertoire. A full year in the 9th grade concert band is required before moving to the Upperclassmen Concert Band sections.
Prerequisites: Students must have been in band for at least one year during middle school and receive a recommendation to continue in high school from their middle school band director.
Enrollment required for participation: Yes
Marching band required for participation: Yes; 9th grade students are strongly encouraged to participate in marching band. Extenuating circumstances preventing this will be discussed with the student, family, and band staff on a case-by-case basis.
Audition required for participation: Color Guard and Percussion students will have clinics with the adjunct staff in April. All rising 9th grade students will have "spring training" in May. The required materials and more information will be communicated to students and their current band directors in March.
Sign up process: Request Band class for both the fall and spring semester with your guidance counselor. Plan to attend the in-person registration event in the spring at Carolina.

Time Commitment:

Students concentrate on developing technique breath control, tone quality, range and proper posture. The major emphasis of this course is on traditional concert literature. Students will have the opportunity to perform as soloists and members of ensembles.

Audition required for participation: Band is inclusive and students are rarely turned away from participation. Auditions are to determine parts and help the Directors prepare for the needs of all students.
Rising 8th grade Woodwind/Brass/Percussion students will need to audition to participate in Competitive Marching Band. Incoming 9th grade students do not need to audition but must be recommended by their middle school director. Students participating in Fall sports may still participate in the class and not participate in Marching Band. Students not participating in a Fall sport must participate in marching band. Percussion students will need to attend live auditions in April to determine parts. Woodwind/Brass students will be given a link to submit an audition video. It is recommended that students begin learning Junior Scales/Chromatic Scale and Region Solo. Audition information will be provided to your middle school director.
Percussion auditions are open to all middle and high school students through auditions (middle school students must be zoned for Fountain Inn HS). Clinics and auditions will occur in April. It is recommended that students begin learning Junior Scales/Chromatic Scale, Rudiments, and Region Solo.
Color Guard Auditions for Marching Band are open to all middle and high school students through auditions (middle school students must be zoned for Fountain Inn HS). Clinics and auditions will occur in April at FIHS. More information will be sent to schools starting in March. Guard students are not required to participate in class.
Competitive Winter Guard (Spring) is open to all students in middle or high school. Middle school students do not have to be zoned for FIHS but may participate if their zoned high school does not have an active Winter Guard. Auditions occur in November at FIHS.
Competitive Winter Percussion Ensemble is based on interest and auditions. Check website and social media for audition information beginning Fall 2022.

Important Information: The band at Greenville High School travels a lot. In the last few years, we have visited Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Dayton, Ohio, Indianapolis, and them parks such as Universal Studios, Fun Spot, Disney World, Carowinds, and Busch Gardens. We host indoor percussion, indoor winds, and indoor winterguard in addition to our fall marching band. Our groups compete in World Championships in Dayton, OH every year and compete in numerous other regional and state competitions. If you like to travel and perform, Greenville High is the place for you.
