Curriculum
The Design and Production (Technical Theatre) courses at the Fine Arts Center are honors-level courses that, through hands-on experiences, introduce the variety of fields that make up the world of Technical Theatre. Through lecture, discussion, project-based learning, studio work, and independent research, students will explore both the academic and creative aspects of theatre design and production. This includes project-based problem solving skills using the design process. The Technical Theatre course is designed for students who wish to continue further advanced study or work professionally in the art field of theatre design and production.
Technical Theatre covers a wide range of different skills, trainings, and processes. There are two overarching sides to technical theatre: design and production. Both aspects of the process are equally important in preparing someone for a 21st century job in the Theatre. A D&P student should also receive training in a broad range of different production areas. (lighting, sound, set, costumes, stage management) Having a broad range of production skills allows a theatre professional to be a better collaborator. And collaboration is one of the most important skills for a professional designer/engineer/technician. As we cover both design and production in a wide array of different areas, we will document/portfolio your projects and the processes behind the projects.
The areas to be covered include (though are not limited to):
Show etiquette and practice
The design process
Scenic Design/ set construction
Lighting for the stage
Sound/Audio for the stage
Costume Design and Construction
Stage Management
Prop Design and Construction
Projection Design
Theatre history and theatre appreciation
Professional practice, the business of theatre
