Second Grade pictures from the STEAM Lab

Second graders have been learning about landforms in their homerooms during science and during STEAM Lab. In the first pictures, they are making models of rivers, lakes and oceans.  Think how you would model each of these. How would your model of a river look different than a model of a lake?

In the next pictures, students experimented to see the effect of water pouring down soil and a glacier (ice cube) sliding over sand.

Finally, groups worked together to make a diagram, not just a picture, of different bodies of water.  What animals and plants would you include in a diagram of a lake? How would a diagram of the ocean be different?

These last several pictures show students learning about the Scientific Method. Their purpose was to determine which type of material would best protect an ice cube from melting from exposure to light-construction paper (opaque), wax paper (translucent) or cling wrap (transparent). Sometimes our data and conclusions surprised us, but even that is part of the learning when you use the Scientific Method.
