Fifth Grade pictures from the STEAM Lab

One of fifth grade's first activities was to learn about chemical reactions. These pictures show how each spot on the chart was a mixture of two substances.  Students observed and recorded any changes in the new mixture.  The one they were most excited about was when they mixed Borax and all-purpose glue to create something special. You'll have to ask them what it was.

These pictures show teams of fifth graders working through the Engineering Design Process to create a filter for dirty water. The dirty water itself was a mixture because it contained soil, sand and tiny pieces of mulch.  Students could use any combination of coffee filters, gauze, cotton balls and rocks to help filter the water.  They started by sketching a diagram of their filter and then set about constructing it.  Ask them what they learned from this experience.

These pictures show stations of engineering activities. Notice how every student is involved and creating.
