Dear Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you well. The students are working hard, and I am excited to share what we have been learning and what's coming up this month!
π Important Announcements: What's New in Class
Level 2 Hands-On Equations
This month, we began Level 2 Hands-On Equations! My fourth graders have been very curious about our new white-colored hands-on pieces, which we call "stars" and represent as β*β. These pieces are the opposite of our familiar "x" pieces. This unique, intuitive approach will allow students to gain early familiarity with the concepts of positive and negative numbers as they work through Level 2. This is a foundational step toward more advanced algebra!
Focus on Bridge Engineering π
We are wrapping up our introductory unit on the Engineering Design Process and transitioning into an exciting study of bridges! Students will explore the history and various designs of bridges, learning how engineers use mathematics and physics to create these vital structures. We'll be looking at everything from beam bridges to suspension bridges.
π Celebrations from the Past Month: Skills in Action
Mastering the Engineering Design Process
Β
In October, students demonstrated excellent communication and teamwork skills while designing and building structures as part of our Engineering Design Process unit. They learned the key steps: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve. These collaborative activities not only challenged their technical skills but also strengthened their ability to work effectively as a team. This hands-on experience is vital for developing critical thinking!
ποΈ Looking Ahead
Β
I am excited about the learning opportunities this month holds! Thank you again for your partnership in your child's education.
