TIPS FOR HELPING YOU SUCCEED IN SIXTH GRADE
Ideas for PARENTS:
Encourage your student to write assignments and quiz/test dates in his/her agenda/planner EVERY DAY.
Check teachers’ websites to verify assignments, quiz and test dates, especially if your student claims that he/she has nothing to work on.
Check the Parent Portal once a week. You will be able to see grade information before report cards are sent home(updated weekly).
Set aside a quiet place and time for your student to work and study every day. It would be best for students to work in an area without the distraction of a television, computer, or cell phone/text messages.
Even if a student does not have any new assignments to complete, he/she can study the tech book, notes and homework to prepare for upcoming tests and quizzes.
Ideas for STUDENTS:
· Write in your agenda/planner every day.
· Complete assignments on time. This will not only help you earn the highest score possible, it will also allow you to check/discuss your answers in class to find out how you did, and it will give you a chance to ask questions on anything you missed.
· If you don’t complete an assignment on time, complete it as soon as possible! Work turned in the next day is worth up to 75%. But this is much better than earning a 50%/NHI for not doing the assignment at all!
· Check your assignments in class when they are discussed. Ask questions about things you don’t understand. Try the problems or questions at home again later until you see how to get the correct answer.
· Take notes during new lessons. This will give you information to look back at if you're stuck on a homework question, and it will give you information to STUDY before a quiz or test.
· When you get a quiz/test back, pay close attention in class when the correct answers are discussed. Try the questions at home again later until you see how to get the correct answer. Figure out what you did wrong, so you won't make that mistake again.
· Use the tech book websites provided by your teachers to practice and get more examples.
· In the 2-3 days before a quiz or test, STUDY! Reread your notes. Make sure you understand the vocabulary and definitions you wrote down. Look at your homework and class work to remind yourself what you’ve been learning about. Use the review sheet or review problems in the book to practice the types of questions that are on the test.
· If you need more help, talk to your teacher. We are available before or after school to help students who want to improve, or we can give you other suggestions to help you improve your grade.
