Description
This pathway prepares individuals to do the work of a Basic Emergency Medical Technician who care for the sick and injured. The coursework prepares students for a National Emergency Medical Technician practical skills evaluation and cognitive exam for recognition as a certified Basic Emergency Medical Technician by the State of South Carolina and the National Registry of EMTs.
As prescribed by the South Carolina Department of Education, the course pathway includes completing EMS 1 and EMS 2 or may include course pathway of Firefighter I and Firefighter II as the bridge to EMS 3.
The EMS 3 program is for high school students who are at least 17 years of age. Students may test prior to their 18th birthday and with successful completion of their practical skills and written exam will receive a provisional certificate but students must be 18 years of age and a high school graduate to receive their official National Registry of EMT certification.

Expectations and Goals
Enrollment in this course requires a grade of B or better per the requirements of the South Carolina Education Department.
Successful completion of this course requires adherence to course policies, an overall minimum passing score of 75%, and successfully demonstrating all required skills.
Students must complete a minimum of 30 patient contacts, pass the end-of-course exam, and pass all skill evaluations. It is the lead instructor’s discretion if a student will be allowed to attempt the National Registry Exam.
Course Attendance Policy
Student attendance is required at all scheduled classes, including skill sessions. Students will not receive credit for the course if they have more than 5 unexcused absences per semester per state laws and the SC Department of Education. Additionally, DPH allows a maximum of 10% of class time to be missed. If you exceed this 10%, you may not be eligible to test for your National Registry Certification. If there is an extenuating circumstance that causes the student to miss more than the 10% allowed by DPH, it will be the student’s responsibility to provide in writing to the lead instructor an explanation of the excessive absences. If 10% or more absences occur for any reason, course failure is likely. It will be at the discretion of the instructor if the student will be permitted to take the National Registry exam.
If a student misses any class, he or she is responsible for any missed quizzes, examinations, and material covered in that class session. If you are absent, you will have 5 days to make up any missed assignments. Prompt arrival is expected at all class activities. It is the student’s responsibility to sign in on the attendance roster.
Comportment
Students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the professional expectations for EMTs at all times. Students are reminded that they are representatives of the Donaldson Career Center whenever and wherever they are involved with course-related activities. Professional conduct is essential to a successful course experience and EMS career.
Dress and Appearance
Students are required to wear the program approved uniform on all designated days and on ALL clinical ride times. Students will be provided with a DCC program polo and or t-shirt. Students must provide a dark blue pants, black belt and appropriate black safety-toed shoes.
All uniform elements shall be neat, clean, and in good repair.
All students will be well-groomed and neat in appearance at all times. Long hair should be pulled back and secured neatly. Fingernails shall be kept at a clean, short length and without colored polish to ensure patient safety and to help reduce punctures or tearing of PPE. Students are allowed one pair of stud-type earrings. No hoop or hanging earrings will be allowed for safety reasons.
Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated and is grounds for immediate dismissal from the program and other administrative action by the program. Examples include, but are not limited to:
Cheating in any form
Falsification or forgery of academic documents, applications, clinical evaluations, lab evaluations, or other materials
Plagiarism (including copying and pasting of electronic text into assigned work)
Course Grading and Grading Scale
EMS 3 will adhere to the district weighting categories of 40% for minor assessments and 60% for major assessments. A minimum of 9-12 minor assessments and 3 to 4 major assessments will be given each nine weeks.
