Band

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year!!

I am so excited to start this new year with you all! We are going to have an amazing time getting to one another. We will be creating and building relationships through music. Let's all learn and have a great time together!

Parents/Guardians: I am very excited to have your child in the band program here at Bryson Middle School! Playing an instrument is not an easy task. It requires patience, dedication, and enthusiasm. It also requires practice, practice, and practice. The best thing you can do to help your student is encourage them to practice at least a few times a week. The practice time does not have to be very long. The goal is frequent practice on a regular basis. The more they do that, the more fun it becomes. Ask them to play for you! The most fun thing about playing an instrument is playing with and for others! Your support and encouragement will be the best thing you can do to help your child be successful in band.

Please complete the information form here to help me stay in touch with you and to know your child a little better.

6th grade band students: To start off the year, students will have their choice of five instruments: flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. I know some may have their hearts set on instruments other than these five, but don't worry. The time will come for additional instruments. If you would like to get a jump start on selecting an instrument, please go to the BAND tab above and check out the Be Part of the Music web site. We will also discuss them in class the first and second week of school. After students have chosen an instrument, information will be sent home regarding the needed supplies as well as how to get an instrument. Second semester, we will talk about switching to other instruments. No matter which instrument you start on, it will only help you with whatever instrument you ultimately choose.

7th and 8th grade band students: For those that were here last year, welcome back! For all those joining us new this year, we are very excited to have you as part of our band family here at Bryson. New 7th grade students will discuss instrument options the first week of school. If you used a school instrument last year, I encourage you to get your own instrument this year if possible. There are rental options below. More information about instruments will be coming home the first week of school as well as needed supplies.

School Owned Instruments, all grades: We do have a supply of school owned instruments. Some are in better shape than others so securing your own instrument is the best option, especially for 7th and 8th grade students. If you do need to use a school instrument, there is a $50 per year maintenance fee. Information on using a school instrument will be sent home the first week of school.

Instrument and supply options: There are several options for renting instruments from local and online music stores. All of these locations also carry the needed supplies for the instruments as well as the required method book:

My School Music Classroom: direct to home shipping for instruments and supplies. A portion of the money spent is sent back to the band program. www.myschoolmusic.com/brysonms

Pecknel Music in Greenville has an online rental system available: https://www.pecknelmusic.com/t-rental%20information.aspx

Music in Arts in Greenville on Woodruff Road has an online rental system available: https://www.musicarts.com/rentals

If you choose to purchase an instrument and are unsure what to get, please contact me and I will be happy to help. There are lots of inexpensive options online. I understand saving money, but please remember you get what you pay for and an inexpensive instrument initially may end up costing you more in the long run.

Music and Percussion

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year!

I know you are probably wondering what in the world this class is on your schedule. You may or may not have chosen this class. Either way, it is okay. First of all, please know this is not band. These classes are semester exploratory classes. In both classes, we will be learning about music through various avenues.

In percussion class, we will be learning to read and play music through a variety of percussion instruments with the main one being drums. No previous musical experience is necessary. All supplies will be provided. There is no required performance outside of the normal school day. We will have an end of the semester performance that family members may attend, but it will be during our regular scheduled class time.

In music, we will be learning about a variety of musical styles as well as learning to read and play music. Any instruments that we use throughout the semester will be provided. At this time, there are no planned performances. However, if the students really get in to it and would like to have an end of the semester performance, it will be during our regular scheduled class during the day.
