Town Council – Road Salt Reduction
TEMPLATE
Use this template as a guide to write your own letter. An example is given below. See also: How to Use the Templates.
Dear (NAME OF BOARD),
I live in (NAME OF TOWN) and want to share some resources that I have found to help towns reduce their road salt use. (ADD ANY LOCAL SUPPORT FOR ROAD SALT REDUCTION).
Two points to keep in mind:
It only takes one teaspoon of salt to pollute up to 5 gallons of water.
Once you put salt down, it doesn’t go away. Instead, it travels into our lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands, putting aquatic life at risk and endangering our freshwater resources. It also goes into our groundwater.

Minnesota municipalities have seen a lot of success using these trainings. You can see their salt reductions and cost savings here.
If (NAME OF TOWN) is not already implementing these guidelines, I would like to suggest that you begin this season. The potential savings – both financially and, more importantly, to our water – is tremendous.
Best regards,
(YOUR NAME)

I help municipalities and homeowners associations develop policies that promote native plants and pollinators.

Dear Village Board –
I live in the Adirondack Village and want to share some resources I have found to help towns reduce their road salt use. Governor Hochul just announced appointments to the Adirondack Road Salt Reduction Task Force, so this is something New York is working towards, as a whole, too.
