The Greatest Game Ever Played: 1958 Championship Game


In December of 1958, a game was played that many consider one of the most significant games famous games in the NFL history. It was called the Game of Champions, it was played that year in on December 28th. This is known for one of the best games ever played in the NFL. It was a heck of a game played in the Yankee Stadium in New York City. The New York Giants played the Baltimore Colts. This was one of the biggest games ever played because; it was televised nationally across the nation. It was such a huge deal that even the stands were crowded with more than 70,000 people. On top of that even 45,000 people watched from home.

During the game, Football Star Raymond Berry, took a new record that game in getting 12 receptions. This record was held for up to 55 years. (Wiki) This was a very tough game and a nail biter too; the final score was 17-23, Baltimore. Both teams had a really hard and well played game. Quarterback for the Colts, Johnny Unitas, would be known as the best player of this game because he gained the team 136 out of 263 yards that he ran. He is known as ¨Mr. Golden Arm¨ because of how well he can throw the ball. He got 7 intercepts during this game, and also he scored 3 touchdowns! (Wiki)

This game is so important because it marked many new records for the NFL; it was very important because it the first ever broadcasted game across the entire country! This game was also the first NFL playoff game to go into sudden death overtime; the regular season games simply ended with a tie score, but this outcome that clearly was not satisfactory for a championship game. This game is known for the game that began the NFL's popularity. The last quarter of the game was the most intense because they were side by side the whole way then the Baltimore Colts had ran the length of the field to tie the game with seven seconds left on a field goal. This game was so rare and popular that it was televised. Even the players were on edge, Gino Marchetti watched from the sideline of the game while he was suffering from a severe leg injury.
