Monday Night Football (1970)

It Changed the Way We Watch Football

Monday Night Football aired on television on September 21, 1970, with host Keith Jackson, Don Meredith, and Howard Cosell (Jack Buck; Rob Rains (1997). That's a Winner!). MNF is known to be a very significant series in football history, and this was because it brought something different to the scene of television. MNF was completely different than any other television series, and this is including Sunday football. MNF really expanded the view of the audience because they would play highlights of the games the week before and the past Sunday (Joe Horrigain). MNF really was a new way of watching football. All of these features created different ways of watching. According to Joe Horrigain, these Monday nights would bring people into sports bars and people would watch MNF at the bar. Also MNF began 4 years before the AFL and NFL combined for the first time (www.nfl.com). Monday Night Football is also in the top 50 most watched TV shows (www.indiewire.com). To add on Monday Night Football is the longest airing sports shows in TV history (forbes.com). Being that MNF is on of the most watched on TV, this series will forever go down as one of the greatest events that has happened in football history and television history.
