Patina

Patina lives with her white aunt and African American uncle, who’ve adopted Patina and her younger sister. Patina’s dad died when she was younger, and her mom’s health has made it impossible for her to care for Patina and her sister, although she’s still very much a part of their lives. Patina has recently started attending a private school, and feels no connection to the other girls in her class, who are all white and upper class. She’s much more comfortable with the three other African American girls on her 4 x 800 relay track team, but both social groups require careful navigation and complex cultural competence. Patina slowly gets to know one of her classmates while working on a school project with three other girls. Finding a way for their group to work together both parallels and contrasts the teamwork she is learning on the track team, where she’s discovering that there is a middle ground between holding out and giving in that can be a sweet spot of synchronicity. There’s a great deal of depth and heart in this appealing, often humorous, story about the day-to-day life of an African American girl. Fans of Ghost will appreciate encountering Ghost and other members of the track team, here serving in secondary roles as Patina’s life takes center stage.

The Giver

Please encourage your child to take some time to read books they find enjoyable this summer. The more students read, the more they learn, the better they write, and the more background knowledge they have to share during the school year. According to study.com, “Encouraging children to read is critical to helping them stay on track with other students and retain information and literacy development over the summer.”

How to Help Your Child Choose a Book

Ask a librarian or teacher. Librarians and teachers know what books appeal to and are appropriate for teen readers. Visit the library with your teen so that you can speak with the librarian together to find some great (and perhaps unexpected) titles for your teen to try. Many libraries also sponsor book clubs where teens can connect over books. Librarians can point you to lists of suggested titles published online.

Go to the blogs. Teens want to read what their peers are reading. There are many wonderful blogs where teens can read and chat about the books they and their peers are reading. This is a great way to learn about new titles and to help teens broaden their reading interests, as well as integrate reading and social activities.

Peruse the aisles of your library or bookstores. Bookstores organize stock by levels of age-appropriateness, as well as by subject matter and type of book. Encourage your teen to sit down with a book and read a bit while you're still at the library or bookstore. Encourage your teen to check out several different titles, rather than just one or two.

Find out what books your teen has enjoyed in the past. One way to help out is by choosing other titles by the same author. A teen who enjoyed Walter Dean Myers' Monster might also like Sunrise Over Fallujah. A teen who liked Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak might want to read Prom. Teens also like to read novels that occur in a series, like the Twilight and Harry Potter books. Once you know the subjects and genres that your teen enjoys, consult librarians and even Amazon to find other titles you might not have known about.

Check out graphic novels. There are many great, high quality graphic novels appealing to a wide range of readers. If your teen read Maus, a graphic novel account of the Holocaust, check out Persepolis, a graphic autobiography of a young girl growing up during the Iranian revolution.

Read a self-help book. Teens who are exploring and perhaps struggling with their identities or personal problems might like choosing books related to those issues.

Become an Expert! Encourage your child to choose a topic and read informational text all about that topic.

Styx is full of ideas that take both brothers out of their comfort zone. He partners with them in a series of escalator trades that starts with a bag of fireworks and ends with a motorbike. It all seems to be working like a dream until some of the trades start to involve illegal and dangerous moves. Caleb’s wry observant voice recounts the boys’ escapades through a summer that proves to be anything but ordinary, and also shows Caleb’s growth and maturity as he wrestles with trust, relationships, and ethical dilemmas. Both of Bryan’s parents encourage him to spend time with Mike, a new kid in their Brooklyn projects. He and Mike have a lot in common, from fathers who’ve been in jail to a love of superhero comics and drawing. Bryan, who is Puerto Rican, likes when Mike, who is African American, says they’re brothers, even if he’s a little jealous of the attention his dad gives Mike. But Mike is sometimes selfish, and mean for no reason. He creates drama just to see what will happen. Bryan can’t deny some of the drama is thrilling, like jumping onto the back of a subway train. Yet when things fall apart, Mike doesn’t stick around and take his share of the blame. It makes Bryan angry, and despite the fact that Bryan isn’t tough (something he’s keenly aware he’s judged for), he knows he has a temper, and he’s worried he’ll go off, which is exactly how his dad ended up in jail. At what point, he wonders, is a friend no longer a friend? There isn’t an easy answer, and it only gets harder when Bryan’s parents tell him to be honest with Mike, but not give up on him completely. Bryan’s struggle is so relatable, and so realistically complex, as he comes to realize the voice he needs to listen is his own. Something to Say

African American Shayla has grown up in the suburbs and went to a predominantly white elementary school. Now in a more diverse middle school, Shayla is hurt and confused to discover some of the other Black kids believe she thinks she’s better than they are. Shayla is also confused and upset after a not guilty verdict is returned in a police shooting of a Black man. Shayla’s older sister Hana, a politically active high school senior, is among those protesting in response. Shayla doesn’t like stirring things up, and she doesn’t like drawing attention to herself, but she’s fueled by the injustice and inspired by Hana to start a black armband movement at school, only to find herself the target of admonishment by the administration. Shayla’s political awakening is set against a deft blend of spot-on middle school social issues, from changing old friendships to trying to forge new ones to first interest in romance, which plays out in believably awkward, sometimes painful ways. Author Rob Harrell had the same kind of cancer as Ross, and the physical and emotional impact of the illness on Ross, who is white, as well as the reactions of those around him, including his parents (dad and step-mom), feels incredibly real in a story as full of wry humor as honesty.
