Summer Reading Book
In Keena Ford and the Second-Grade Mix-Up, students explore what it means to be honest, especially when it may seem difficult to tell the truth. Students will also explore the value of friendship and how jealousy can sometimes come between friends.
Questions for at home discussion:
How do other people influence the decisions you make in your life?
What does it mean to forgive someone?
How can we learn from our mistakes?
What does it mean to be honest? Why is it important to show honesty in our everyday lives?

Optional Activities
Given the choice between reading a book that is too easy and a book that is too hard – better to choose the easy book for developing independent reading.
Parents should focus on interest, ease of decoding, and ability to understand, rather than “level” to put a child in the “right” book. A level is a teacher's tool.
Let your child help in selecting a text – they know what they can and cannot do as a reader.
Choice is key – the more texts from which a child has to choose, the more likely they are to find a text they want to read.
The only “wrong” book is no book at all; however, we do not want children attempting to read text that frustrates them and turns them off from reading.
.....................................................................................
