What if cities were edible?
Some city sectors are designed as edible gardens. Walk through and you can harvest what you like. Garden managers make sure food is safe to eat and organize weekly community produce pick-up days for people who live farther away...
Research informing this future
Many of us have seen urban gardens and farms. Research is finding that densifying those spaces, taking them indoors and introducing hydroponic capacities at scale could make yields from urban farms significant. It could also mean making cities foragable by design. Many people harvest edible plants and animals from urbanized spaces, whether it's fishing off urban docks, or picking huckleberries or watercress in city parks. Cities could be designed to emphasize these kinds of vegetated spaces, increasing the amount of areas that can sustain residents over time. What would living in an edible city mean for you? What concerns or inspiration does it bring up?
