Microgrids explored in this future are powered by combinations of distributed solar panels and hydrogen fuel cells. When hydrogen is transported over long distances, it poses serious fire hazards. Over short distances, however, it can be an effective fuel source. Research on extracting hydrogen from human waste through microbial biomass conversion informed how the microgrids in this future could function and how much power they could generate.
