State Testing Is Here!

"Colorado 9th and 10th-graders take the PSAT while 11th-graders take the SAT. These tests help you and your student check their progress towards postsecondary success."-Colorado Department of Education

Juniors will be taking the CMAS Science test this year. "Results can help families check in with student progress towards high school graduation and readiness for college and careers."- Colorado Department of Education

We are so excited for our students to have the opportunity to showcase their knowledge this year through SAT/PSAT and CMAS. The Juniors will be testing on both April 12th and the 13th. On the 12th, the Juniors will be taking the SAT test. Juniors will be able to use these scores when they are applying to college next year and potentially meet graduation requirements. The CMAS Science test, which juniors will take on April 13th, is a computer-based test that will allow students to demonstrate their science capacities.

The 9th-graders will be taking the PSAT 9 on April 12th and the 10th-graders will take the PSAT 10 on April 13th. The results of these tests will help guide students on areas of strength and areas that could be improved on prior to them taking the SAT in their junior year.

Students that are not testing do not need to report to school in the morning. Students with a letter grade of an F in one or more classes will need to stay for Intervention time to make up assignments and tests. Intervention time will run from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm on the respective days. Juniors, and freshmen will stay on April 12th and sophomores will stay on April 13th.  In addition, seniors required to attend Intervention will need to report on April 12th at 12:30pm.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Cress at scress@greeleyschools.org.

Do grades matter?

Yes!  Grades absolutely matter.  ECA students are fully-enrolled students at Aims Community College and are held to the same academic (grade) standards as students on the main Aims campus.  In order to remain in good academic standing at Aims Community College, students must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 ("C" average) in their college classes.  [Note: college classes at ECA are indicated by the "AIMS" prefix on their class schedule and transcript.  Ex: AIMS HIS 1220 US History Since 1870.]  Good academic standing is required in order to receive a degree.

If a student's cumulative GPA at Aims falls below 2.0, they are placed on academic probation as a warning that they are not making satisfactory academic progress.  While on academic probation, a student must earn a minimum 2.0 GPA ("C" average) in their college classes each semester in order to remain eligible to continue taking college classes.  If that requirement is not met, the student is placed on academic suspension and is not allowed to continue taking college classes.  Academic suspension may impact a student's ability to remain at Early College Academy.  The best way for students to avoid academic probation or academic suspension, is to earn grades of "C" or better in all classes.

In addition, it's important to note that students must earn a final grade of "C" or better in college classes in order for those classes to transfer to another college or university.  Students have the potential to graduate from ECA with both their high school diploma and 60 credits (roughly half) of a four year degree complete, but must earn grades of "C" or better in order to do so.

Power Hour

POWER Hour is a great opportunity for students to stay after school to receive some extra help.  On Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm in Mrs. Cerise's room (room 107) students will be able to work with teachers and other students on completing assignments, group projects, and making up tests. If you have any questions about POWER Hour, please contact Joel Shires at jshires@greeleyschools.org or your counselor.

Saturday School

As we are rapidly approaching the end of the school year, we would like to extend the opportunity for students to come and work for 3 uninterrupted hours. This is a great chance for students to complete work that may be missing or for assignments that have a quickly approaching due date.

ECA Special Education

My name is Tommy Ervin and I am a special education teacher here in District 6, at Early College Academy. This is my 4th year teaching, my previous years were spent at Frederick high school and Gretna high school (Nebraska), making this my first year here in District 6. My main role at Early College academy is to provide academic support through accommodations to allow students to access the general education classroom. Outside of work, I enjoy coaching basketball at University High School and hanging out with family and friends. Not enough good things can be said about the staff and students here at ECA and I can’t wait to continue working for District 6.

Club Spotlight: Earth Club

Here at ECA, Earth Club is a very interactive and fun club for students who care about our environment and want to problem solve about how to make the best environment for our school, for our state, and our planet. In the most recent meeting during lunch on Wednesday March 22, the Earth Club members met to plan for our Climate Leadership Summit field trip to CSU, an interactive experience organized by high school students, for high school students in the Northern Colorado region. As a unique collaboration between Colorado State University's School of Global Environmental Sustainability and the Poudre School District's Career & Innovation Department, this event will engage students to learn from each other and from the foremost leaders of climate science.

This field trip will be a capstone to a highly productive year for the club with several significant accomplishments, including:

The members of Earth club have had an impactful year so far and hope to continue building momentum for future projects to bring positive change to our school and our planet. For additional information about Earth Club, please contact Mr. Joel Shires at jshires@greeleyschools.org.
