Remind can be used to reach parents where they are: via text, on the Remind app, or through email. It is designed to be “private” in the sense that you can send mass text messages to parents, but they won’t have either yours or each other’s contact information. While Remind can be used with students, there are important restrictions as described below.
There are specific instructions in the Resources section below about using Remind with students
Teachers can create up to 10 classes, with up to 150 members of each class
We use the free version of Remind in GCSD, so accounts are not created and there are no rostered groups
Use your GCSD Google account when you register for a Remind account
For each class you create, go to Settings and turn Participant messaging off. Not doing this will result in the ability for participants to message each other.
Remind is designed to send short, quick reminders. It's not a tool to be used to assign work to students, or even the way to communicate assignments regularly. Remind is best suited to send a brief message like "Don't forget, everyone, the project for XYZ is due on Friday," "Check your To-Do section in Google Classroom for all of the assigned work," or "JV Quidditch Practice is postponed today because the fields are flooded."
We don't recommend Remind for two-way communication or communication about a specific student. All "official" communication between GCSD employee and parents is best done via district email.
To do this, we highly recommend going to the upper left, click on your name, account settings, then notification preferences. By unchecking “Allow replies to your messages,” this will make Remind a one-way teacher to participant service.
Remind is a great tool to use to communicate with parents, and even students in settings where there's no Google Classroom, especially for clubs and sports.
