Middle School Science Teachers are invited to participate in a 2024 Discovering PLACE Summer Institute for Educators.
This three-day professional development opportunity will introduce teachers to place-based education and ways to integrate it into Mi-STAR Unit 6.1, which focuses on the Water Cycle. Participants will be supported by the combined resources of a Mi-STAR Professional Learning Facilitator (PLF) and Discovering PLACE staff. The facilitators will assist educators in integrating locally relevant topics and community partners into Mi-STAR Unit 6.1 which focuses on the Water Cycle.
This Professional Learning Community (PLC) is being offered as a three-day summer institute that is designed to help educators:
Implement the Mi-STAR Unit 6.1 "Water on the Move" - The Water Cycle with students
Infuse local people, themes, and resources into the unit
Identify community partners whose employment or expertise ties to the unit
Identify opportunities to see the unit’s themes and phenomena at work in the community
Plan to engage students in a local action project to benefit the environment in the community
This PLC offers educators:
A stipend of $300 for full participation
Access to a mini-grant of up to $400 to pay for equipment, supplies, transportation, or other costs of a project to benefit the environment in your community.
Additional coaching and support for integration during the school year
Up to 17 SCECHs anticipated (pending state approval)
This project has been funded wholly or in part through Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s Nonpoint Source Program by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
PBE project grants are available thanks to support from MiSTEM Region 6 with materials developed under a MiSTEM Network grant awarded by the Michigan Department of Education.
GLSI/Mi-STAR PBE PLCs were first piloted in Michigan in 2022. They were developed through a partnership between Mi-STAR at Michigan Technological University and the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (GLSI) with support from the MiSTEM Advisory Council.
This video features teachers and eighth graders from Armstrong Middle School in the Kearsley School District who partnered with the Genesee County Parks’ For-Mar Nature Preserve and Arboretum to add PBE to Mi-STAR Unit 8.7 focused on Climate Change.
These materials were developed under a MiSTEM Network grant awarded by the Michigan Department of Education and with support from our partners at the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative and Mi-STAR at Michigan Technological University.
