Most people go to the high school in the town they live in, while others choose where to go through school choice. Here at Proctor Jr/Sr High School, 10 students from other communities have chosen to come to this school.
One person who chose to come here was sophomore Camrin Camp. Camrin went to Poultney but wanted to come here. He said that he didn't like Poultney because it was a bad school and he didn't want to graduate there. He wanted to go to a new school, and he already heard Proctor was good so he wanted to come here when he got the chance.
Camrin says he really likes Proctor because his friends and the teachers care about him. He prefers it to Poultney, “The only thing I really miss is my old friends but other than that, Proctor’s way better.”
Freshman Raya Provost came here to have fewer classes in each semester. She, like Camrin, says she misses her friends from her last school, Fair Haven. But she also says she has made some new ones too. "Proctor is okay,” she says. “I had to sign papers to come here, that's really it.” She says she does like how there are fewer classes here and how it's “chill”.
Sophomore Jordan Wiese came from West Rutland and says that, ”It’s better and there's nothing really bad about this school.”Jordan says he came here because he wanted to go to a smaller school, saying “it’s way smaller”(because they have their elementary school in the same building). To come here he had to shadow a student and sign some papers. Jordan also gave out some advice for switching to new schools: “Make sure you have some friends before you go and make sure it's what you want.”
Maura Thompson lived in Proctor for about a year but then moved and went to Rutland Middle School. She later decided that she wanted to return to Proctor. She says she really likes Proctor. “I think it's a very strong school system, there's more of an opportunity for teachers to connect 1 on 1 with students and help them develop and you don't get that in bigger schools.”
What almost everyone has in common is they miss their old friends, but usually after moving to a new school you also make new friends.
“People usually come here because of the small atmosphere and sports,” Guidance Counselor Mr Cummins says. He notes that some also come for the curriculum or schedule.
