Every Sunday during the winter, the softball team had indoor practices at the Rutland County Little League Indoor Facility from 6-8pm. Their goal was to improve their skills to take on this upcoming season.
¨I´m extremely happy with the winter workouts. The core team has got their hitting skills timed… you can see the hunger that they want to be good,¨ Coach Luba says.
This season will mark Coach Luba´s 4th year leading the Lady Phantoms Softball team. They ended last season 16-2, being knocked out in the semi-finals 4-5.
With that hard loss from last season, Coach Luba believes that these girls are ¨not short¨ of bringing home a championship this season. This pursuit of the championship will take a lot of effort.
Coach Luba finds a lot of use for his assistant coaches and helpers, and is very grateful for them. ¨Having more coaches is better, it gives the girls more reps; the more adults the better,¨ Coach Luba says. Other coaches include: Dustin Blanchard, Ron Wood, Caydence Goodwin, and Rhi Lubaszewski.
This team is very determined to meet their goals. ¨I want to make it to the championship, and improve on my catching skills,¨ Freshman Bizzy Farley says.
Senior Hailey Gipe says that her goal this season is to ¨have fun and improve my skills in batting and fielding.¨
Coach Luba says one of his goals for this season is to ¨Make sure the girls who are developed get to the next level.” He also wants to help the others, who are still developing, to be ready for the season.
The Lady Phantoms team is made up of players from three different schools: PrHS, Killington Mountain School, and Mount Saint Joseph. This has made a positive impact.
¨We have gotten more mature, the kids from different schools have taught us to adapt and win together,¨ Bizzy says.
¨If everyone works hard individually on personal goals then it's easier to come together as a team, and work hard to play hard,¨ Hailey adds. She also notes,¨We've got some new players who brought a lot of hard work and skills.”
New players to watch from PrHS are Cassie Baker and Raya Provost.
As they head towards their championship goal, they have gotten off to a good start with a record of 2-0 as of April 27.
¨This team can do it. This is the year,¨ Coach Luba says with confidence.
