What Can Women Do?

Hundreds of girls go to the Women Can Do Conference every year, where they can potentially find their future job or inspiration for it. This year, it was in Randolph, VT.
Over 400 students attending the event, including 15 of our students, had the opportunity to meet with over 80 employers to learn about the possibilities for their future.
Sophomore Olivia Fitzgerald said she wanted to go, “Because I don't know what I'm going to do with my life.” Olivia mentioned that her favorite part was driving excavators.
The excavators were big hits, with lines of girls waiting to drive one. Olivia drove one, thought it was fun, took a picture in it, and said she might want to work in construction in her future. Some other girls from Proctor also drove an excavator.
Fellow Sophomore Vanessa Oeschlie said she went, “Because there was space for me and I thought like most of my friends were going, so that it would be fun.” Vanessa mentioned that she liked that there were multiple things to do and look at.
Mrs. Lucia and Mrs. Younce went as chaperones because the opportunity was presented to them and they thought it would be a fun experience.
The Montpelier Police brought the impaired goggles that were also a big hit. Students put on the goggles and tried to walk in a straight line as a walking “test” that the police would tell an intoxicated person to do.
Both Mrs. Younce and Vanessa thought it was interesting that there were so many stations, such as one where you can climb a tree, use a plane simulator, weld, climb a firefighter ladder, and sew. Vanessa said she liked “How they had a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, and I liked how it was spaced out.”
Mrs. Lucia thought the “Innovation” station was cool, where you solder a bracelet.
My favorite part was the plane simulator, where you learn the basics of flying a plane. Another student from our school also did it and thought it was fun.
The girls who went this year think it's a good idea for other girls to go on this trip because it's a great learning experience, it’s fun, and you could possibly find your future career or inspiration.
