Everyone knows that JV is the little brother to Varsity in all sports. However, JV works hard to become the big brother.
This year, Proctor's JV team started slowly, going 0-4, but now they are 7-5.
“It wasn't motivation, it was getting the team to work as one. At the beginning of the season, we didn't play as a team,” Camdon Kimball said. But he noted that after their 4th loss, they started working harder and Varsity Head Coach Jake Eaton's impact was also a big factor.
The team is built off four floaters (those who play JV and Varsity basketball): Kaden Dean, Matt Grover, Frank Eugair, and Mason Brothers. “ They are a big part of the team and we’re happy they’re here,” Camdon said.
When talking about the practices and how their coach is, Camdon said, “Practices went well. Head coach Jeremy Cole led the team. It's his second year coaching. In his first year, the JV team went 5-12 and is looking to bounce back.”
They receive strong support from the community. “Our chemistry isn't just the team, the close community at Proctor also leads it, we all respect each other and are friends,” Camdon said.
Floaters play in JV games and approximately a quarter of varsity games, which can be a physical and mental challenge. “Being a floater is fun, I get a lot of good experience and I get to practice with the varsity guys.” Mason Brothers said.
When you’re a floater, you have double the practices.” It’s a lot of time I don’t get to use, but having two practices will help me become a better player, not just for myself, but for the team as well,” Mason added.
Mason is working hard and using these practices as an advantage towards next season. “My goals are to start varsity and become the best player I could be,” Mason said
“Being told you’re a floater is like getting the gift you’ve always wanted on Christmas day!” Mason said. Mason predicts he will become a full-time varsity player next year. “Mark my words.”
Sometimes it’s different for other floaters because of the playing time, but they know it gets them better prepared mentally and physically. “It’s nice to play with the more experienced guys, I learn a lot more from the coach and players and it gets me better over time,” floater Frank Eugair said.
JV is 7-5 after a 0-4 deficit at the beginning of the season, but now they’re optimistic about their last game of the season. Their last game is Friday, February 16th, vs Poultney.
