Gravesend Grammar School

Curriculum Journey

RE / PPP

Mission Statement

We aim to prepare students to be able to take their place in a diverse society.

This is achieved through exposing students to an ambitious and broad curriculum throughout their experience of RE and Philosophy. This experience will equip students with the skills and knowledge required to explore their place in society and to question the world around them. We aim to support students in their development of the core pillars of the RE and Philosophy curriculum including: substantive knowledge, appreciating where this knowledge comes from and then students’ own personal reflection. As a result of engaging with our RE and Philosophy curriculum we hope to support students in their progress towards Gravesend Grammar School’s ‘Pillars of Success’, to foster a critical and philosophical approach to learning and to form their own opinions while adhering to the School motto of Consule Cunctis (take thought for everyone).

The Learning Journey

Student Voice

Key Stage 3

‘I think that RE is very good. I’ve enjoyed RE a lot so far. I loved learning about new religions and I really admire some of their cultures.’ ‘RE is a really interactive subject and you get to debate different topics’.

Key Stage 4

With Philosophy A level students will learn the key skills of how to write clearly and accurately, how to express persuasive arguments, and how to develop their own thinking. This will help me with my other subjects that I would like to take for A level such as Economics.

Key Stage 5

"Philosophy at GGS, while not examined, has given me many transferable skills and invaluable insight for later life, as well as being incredibly complimentary to my other subjects, particularly English, History and Politics. Its presence in the school curriculum has allowed me to accrue an interest in philosophy. So much so that I'm currently working on a philosophy based EPQ, hoping to extend my study of philosophy into University."

“I am currently in year 12 and doing an EPQ in philosophy, specifically in ontology and reality. I thoroughly enjoyed studying philosophy in KS4 as we covered many topics and even did a small logic course which really helped to widen my critical thinking skills. Researching for my EPQ has been very rewarding and informative to see the many paths and ways of thinking that famous philosophers have created. I find philosophy truly fascinating as it surrounds us, yet we never think that deeply. I strongly encourage anyone to research just some of the basic ideas of thought such as platonic thought.”
