Curriculum Journey

Biology

Mission Statement

Biology is a process not just a collection of facts. We wish our students to develop mastery of a demanding knowledge based curriculum across the subject, not limited by the confines of GCSE and A level specifications and examinations. Students will develop broad and deep knowledge of key concepts, high level practical techniques and detailed understanding of the scientific method within the Biology discipline. As students progress through the key stages our curriculum will embrace the deviation of biology concepts and approaches from the other scientific disciplines whilst still recognising commonality. We aim to equip them to investigate, question, challenge and advance the world around them and help to advance the world of the future. We wish to engage their imagination and curiosity through the use of purposeful practical work and contextual problem solving so that the questions themselves become more interesting than getting the correct answer.

The Learning Journey

Student Voice

Key Stage 3

Science is the best subject. We get to carry out experiments and use laboratory equipment. I love learning about how living organisms work, why things move and all the different types of chemical reactions. Its great fun!!

Key Stage 4

“I enjoy biology because it gives me the opportunity to stretch my learning and increase everything I know about the human body and other animals along with plants and any other life forms. It shows me how different organisms (an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form) form and grow, giving me deeper knowledge about the world. You learn things such as diffusion and osmosis which are extremely interesting and explain why organisms function the way they do, additionally it shows me how cells divide and grow which explains the different heights of plants and animal cells which is something I have always wondered as it tells you how humans grow. Overall it is a very interesting subject and you will gain much appreciation about the world during the time studying it for GCSE and maybe for A-level or even a degree at university.” Jack Robertson Yr09

Key Stage 5

“Biology is an amazing science to study at A level, and with such world issues as COVID-19 and climate change threatening normal life Biology is becoming an ever more prevalent field in the modern world. The ideas it presents are complex and challenging but are also captivating. I find the topic of genetics and the fact that a series of macromolecules has the ability to create life fascinating. Being able to deepen my knowledge on the subject is an opportunity I am very grateful for. Biology is also a subject that invites you to ask questions and explore wider concepts and for that reason I am also grateful for the Biology staff at GGS who facilitate this wider reading and have massively supported my learning of this great subject.” William Read Yr13
