Testing Windows for HMH Growth Measure: 2023-2024
Beginning of Year (BOY): August 16 - September 22
Middle of Year (MOY): November 6 - December 21
End of Year (EOY): March 4 - April 19
HMH Growth Measure for Reading is used in GSD as a universal screener/benchmark assessment for reading comprehension. It is aligned to the previous Utah Core (not the newly adopted 2023 revised ELA core), is adaptive, and is given 3xs a year to all students to provide educators and stakeholders a data set to consider how well students are responding to Tier I core instruction and whether there are students who may need more supports, e.g., Tier I literacy support classes or Tier II reading intervention classes. This is one of the first steps in the MTSS process for secondary students who may need academic intervention. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with some of the information below that HMH has provided on this assessment.
Additional training is provided for educators in a variety of formats (Google Slide Decks, screencast walkthroughs, in-person or virtual, hands-on training, etc...). Please reach out to the secondary ELA specialist team - Tracy Langlie or Tracy Hansen - to request individual, small or large group trainings personalized for you and/or your team.

A note on understanding assessments that assess reading comprehension:
While many assessments claim to assess reading comprehension, it must be noted that these assessments assess different aspects of reading comprehension since it is a multifaceted, cognitively complex skill that humans do when reading text. Consider, for example, our current screener, HMH Growth Measure. While it assesses certain pieces of reading comprehension, namely in the Reading and Language domains, these are only two areas that are assessed to give educators, administrators, and parents an understanding that students who may be low in these areas may have issues with reading and will need further diagnostic testing to determine where gaps may be in their reading development.
Consider the following graphic that shows the simple view of reading: Students need a lot more skills than just understanding vocabulary to comprehend a text (especially complex texts that adolescent students are exposed to in their secondary content areas). So, in closing, when we assess reading comprehension, we also need to consider that all pieces of comprehension are not assessed in one assessment, nor are they meant to be when it comes to a universal screener. (*Universal screening involves assessing all students with a measure to determine whether additional support is needed to reach proficiency in that skill or subset of skills.)
