Academic Support

Academic Supports

We want all of our students to achieve success at Evergreen Junior High. Evergreen offers a variety of ways to get additional help and support from teachers and mentors. Learn about all of the ways your student can gain the support he or she needs to thrive!

Advisory & Eagle Time- Students have advisory Monday through Thursday after 1st period. Advisory is a 30 minute class period, which gives students time to check grades, work on homework, or read. On Wednesdays and Thursdays during advisory students are able to go to any class on their schedule for additional support. During Eagle Time teachers allow students to retake tests or assignments to improve their grades.

6th Grade Success- All incoming 6th graders take this class the first semester of their 6th grade year. This class helps our 6th graders transition to junior high. Students learn how to navigate junior high and to monitor their academic progress. This class will also focus on life-skill development, academic planning, career exploration and information on options, opportunities, and resources available to ensure junior high school and future success. Counselors give lessons during this class on how to be successful in junior high and stress management.

After School Program- The After School Program supports our students Monday through Friday. This program offers academic help for enrolled students through one on one homework aid, and is especially helpful for students who are learning English as a second language or are falling behind in school for various reasons. We also provide curriculums for emotional regulation, social skills, mindfulness, and self-care. Parents need to complete a registration packet to enroll their student in this program. Registration packets are available in the front office or counseling center.

Check & Connect Mentor- Evergreen Junior High has a mentor that provides one on one academic support to students. Our mentor, Jenilee Carhuaricra-Rivera, checks in with students weekly and helps them with homework. Students that wish to participate in our check and connect mentoring program will need their parent to complete the permission form. Permission forms are available in the counseling center.

College & Career Readiness Planning (CCRPs)- Evergreen counselors meet with all students once per year to discuss future plans and complete course selection for the upcoming year. 8th grade students have a one on one meeting with their parent and counselor to discuss high school course offerings and educational opportunities. Counselors also review each student's YouScience results, which highlights each student's unique talents/interests and matches that with a potential future career field.

Social Emotional Supports

We understand that students also need social emotional supports to acheive academic success in junior high. Learn about some of the additional ways we help our students thrive at Evergreen.

Counselor Check Ins- Students can schedule appointments with their counselor at any time. The counseling center is located in the main office. Students will check in with Mrs. Thompson and either meet with their counselor right away or fill out a call slip to be called down later. Counselors provide academic and social emotional support. We also answer all scheduling questions and schedule change requests.

School Psychologist/Social Worker Support- Evergreen Junior High has a part time School Psychologist and Social Worker that provide support to students. Parents need to sign a counseling permission form in order for their student to receive counseling support.

Social Emotional Learning Lessons (SEL)- SEL lessons are given once a month during advisory. Students learn about various topics, such as, stress management, communication skills, conflict resolution, and suicide prevention, and awareness.
